Westbound I-96 Closed at MLK After Lansing Crash

Westbound I-96 Closed at MLK After Lansing Crash

All westbound I-96 lanes were closed at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Lansing Monday afternoon after a crash.

The Michigan Department of Transportation reported the crash at 1:27 p.m. at Exit 101 in Ingham County. Traffic was diverted onto MLK Boulevard and is significantly backed up. Authorities are encouraging drivers to avoid the area and find an alternate route.

Legal options after an accident

Michigan is a no-fault state, which means that an injured person may qualify for Personal Injury Protection benefits without having to determine whose fault an accident is.

These benefits can help cover economic losses for injuries caused by the crash such as allowable medical expenses, wage loss, replacement services or attendant care.

Recovering noneconomic losses usually requires a separate claim against an at-fault driver. This would only be an option if the injuries meet the state’s threshold of serious impairment of body function, permanent serious disfigurement or death.
