One driver seriously injured in three-vehicle crash on Holton Road
One driver was seriously injured Monday in a three-vehicle crash near Muskegon.
Michigan State Police Grand Rapids Post troopers said the crash happened at about 3:44 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17, on Holton Road near Beattie Road in Dalton Township.
Preliminary investigation shows a southbound vehicle was hit from behind and pushed into the northbound lane, where it was hit again by an oncoming vehicle.
The driver of the rear-ended vehicle was seriously injured. Authorities did not immediately report whether the other two drivers were hurt.
Holton Road was closed between Beattie and Riley Thompson roads while emergency responders worked at the scene. The Michigan Department of Transportation reported that all lanes had reopened before 9 p.m.
State police continue to investigate the crash.
Michigan no-fault benefits and injury claims after a multi-vehicle crash
An injured person may have two separate types of claims after a Michigan motor vehicle crash. Personal injury protection benefits are generally payable without regard to fault when coverage applies. Under MCL 500.3107, those benefits may include reasonable charges for necessary care and certain work loss, subject to policy choices and statutory limits.
The responsible insurer may depend on the injured person’s role, household policies and available coverage. Michigan Legal Center’s explanation of who pays medical bills after a Michigan car accident describes how those priority questions can differ for drivers and passengers.
A separate fault-based claim may seek damages that no-fault benefits do not pay. MCL 500.3135 generally permits noneconomic damages when an injured person suffers death, permanent serious disfigurement or a serious impairment of body function. Legal responsibility and whether the injury threshold is met depend on the crash evidence and medical information.
