Monroe woman and 10-year-old passenger killed in Raisinville Township crash
A 56-year-old Monroe woman and her 10-year-old passenger were killed Wednesday evening in a three-vehicle crash in Monroe County.
The crash was reported at about 7:12 p.m. Aug. 5 on South Custer Road west of Plum Grove Drive, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. The office identified the woman as Amy M. Beason and said she was driving a red 2025 Honda HR-V westbound with a 10-year-old front-seat passenger.
Beason had stopped at a stop sign to turn into a private driveway on the south side of the road when a white 2010 Ford F-150 pickup struck the Honda from behind, the sheriff’s office said. The pickup was driven by Dustin A. Prazner, 38, of Dundee.
The impact pushed the Honda left of center, where it struck another car head-on.
The sheriff’s office said Beason and her passenger were not wearing seat belts and were pronounced dead at the scene.
All four occupants of the Silverado were transported to ProMedica Toledo Hospital in Toledo, Ohio, where they were listed in serious condition.
Prazner was wearing his seat belt, was not injured and was released from the scene.
Michigan no-fault benefits and injury claims after a fatal crash
Michigan’s no-fault personal injury protection (PIP) benefits and a claim against a driver are different issues. Under MCL 500.3105, PIP benefits from an auto accident are payable without regard to fault, subject to the No-Fault Act and applicable policy terms. The correct insurer can depend on the injured person’s role and available insurance policies.
A separate claim for noneconomic damages, such as pain and suffering, is subject to a legal threshold. MCL 500.3135 provides that tort liability for noneconomic loss may apply when the injured person has died, suffered a serious impairment of body function or sustained permanent serious disfigurement. The law does not determine who caused this crash or guarantee that any particular claim will succeed.
