74-Year-Old Airlifted After Mecosta County Three-Vehicle Crash
A 74-year-old Mecosta man was seriously injured and airlifted to a Grand Rapids hospital after a three-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon in Wheatland Township.
Mecosta County Sheriff's Office deputies responded around 2:45 p.m. July 12 to the crash near 9 Mile Road and 25th Avenue, according to WZZM 13.
Deputies said traffic had backed up as vehicles waited to turn into a local business. A Ford Fusion driven by a 17-year-old Midland boy rear-ended a Ford Focus driven by a 28-year-old Big Rapids woman.
The Ford Fusion also rear-ended a Dodge Caravan driven by a 24-year-old Mecosta man, according to the sheriff's account.
Two passengers in the Dodge were hurt. A 22-year-old Mecosta woman suffered a minor injury and was taken to a Big Rapids hospital. The 74-year-old man was seriously injured and flown by Aeromed to a Grand Rapids hospital.
The Ford Focus driver was treated at the scene and released. The initial report did not provide a later condition update for the 74-year-old man or say whether citations were issued.
Legal Questions for Passengers After a Multi-Vehicle Crash
Passengers injured in a Michigan crash may have No-Fault PIP benefits separate from any third-party bodily injury claim. MCL 500.3105 provides general PIP coverage context for accidental bodily injury arising from motor-vehicle use and states that benefits are payable without regard to fault, subject to the No-Fault Act.
Which insurer is responsible can depend on priority rules, the available policies, and the facts. A separate liability claim would require a review of the full crash evidence. Michigan Legal Center's guide to passenger injury claims after a Michigan car accident explains those two questions in more detail.
