Holt moped rider seriously injured in Ingham County hit-and-run
A 33-year-old Holt man suffered serious injuries after a blue SUV struck his moped from behind and left the scene in Wheatfield Township, police said.
Michigan State Police troopers were called at about 10:10 p.m. July 1 to Howell Road near Burkley Road in Ingham County.
A preliminary investigation found the man was riding east on Howell Road when the SUV hit the moped from behind. The impact caused him to lose control, fall onto the road and slide into a ditch.
The rider suffered severe road rash and was taken to University of Michigan Health-Sparrow in Lansing. MSP did not provide a later update on his condition.
Investigators believe the vehicle was a blue SUV with possible front-end damage and white paint transfer from the moped. Police said the driver continued east on Howell Road without stopping.

Legal Duties After an Ingham County Hit-and-Run
Michigan law generally requires a driver who knows or has reason to believe they were involved in a crash to stop. The driver must remain until the required duties are completed. MCL 257.617a covers crashes that injure someone, while MCL 257.619 requires identifying and registration information and reasonable help securing medical care.
The SUV description, possible front-end damage and white paint transfer could help investigators identify the vehicle and driver. Michigan Legal Center's hit-and-run accident guide and post-crash action guide explain the separate legal, insurance and practical questions that can follow.
