Two men killed by semi while checking flat tire on I-94
Two men died Tuesday after being hit by a semi-truck as they checked a flat tire on the shoulder of Interstate 94 in Marengo Township.
Michigan State Police Marshall Post troopers responded around 9 a.m. Sept. 1 near 22 1/2 Mile Road. Their preliminary investigation found that the men had left their truck and were on the shoulder when the semi hit them.
The men were a 51-year-old from Grabill, Indiana, and a 40-year-old from Aurora, Illinois. Their names were not released. The driver of their truck stayed inside and wasn’t hurt.
The semi rolled over, and its driver had minor injuries. Troopers said he was wearing a seat belt.
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene. Eastbound I-94 was closed at Exit 115 while troopers investigated and emergency crews responded.
Michigan State Police Fifth District public information officer Lt. DuWayne Robinson warned that leaving a vehicle along a busy freeway can be dangerous. He advised drivers with vehicle trouble to move as far from travel lanes as safely possible, stay buckled inside and call for help.
The crash remained under investigation Tuesday.

Those benefits can replace certain economic support and services the deceased would have provided, generally for no more than three years after the accident.
A fault-based wrongful death action is different. MCL 600.2922 requires the estate’s personal representative to bring the action when another person’s or company’s wrongful act, neglect or fault caused the death. Recoverable losses can include medical, hospital, funeral and burial expenses, conscious pain and suffering, lost financial support and loss of society and companionship.
