Cannon Township rollover crash leaves 1 in critical condition

One person was critically injured Monday morning after a Cannon Township crash.

According to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened around 6:20 a.m. Monday, June 29, on Pettis Avenue between 5 Mile and Cannonsburg roads.

Two people were in the vehicle when it crashed and rolled over. The sheriff’s office deputies did not say what caused the crash or led to it. One person was listed in critical condition.

Pettis Avenue was closed in the area while deputies investigated.

Legal Options After a Crash in Michigan

Michigan is a no-fault state, which means people injured in a crash may qualify for Personal Injury Protection benefits without first proving who caused the crash.

These benefits can help cover economic losses from the crash such as allowable medical expenses, wage loss, replacement services or attendant care under MCL 500.3107.

Recovering noneconomic losses usually requires a separate claim against an at-fault driver or another responsible party. This may be an option if the injuries meet Michigan’s threshold of serious impairment of body function, permanent serious disfigurement or death under MCL 500.3135.

Legal Issues After a Single-Vehicle Rollover Crash

A single-vehicle crash does not always mean only one person or factor was involved. Investigators may look at speed, distraction, impairment, fatigue, weather, road conditions, vehicle condition and whether another driver’s actions contributed to the crash.

If a passenger was injured, the passenger may have a claim depending on the facts and available insurance. If a vehicle defect, unsafe repair, road defect or another driver contributed to the rollover, those facts could also affect liability.

Michigan’s basic speed law also requires drivers to travel at a careful and prudent speed for conditions and be able to stop within the assured clear distance ahead under MCL 257.627.
