Three hurt, one seriously, in Walker head-on crash involving delivery van

Three people were hurt in a head-on crash Monday, one of them in the hospital with serious injuries after Walker car crash.

The crash happened just after noon Monday, June 29 on Northridge Drive near South Industrial Drive, northwest of Grand Rapids, according to the Walker Police Department.

The accident is still being investigated by police, but preliminary investigation from the police shows that a black sedan crossed the center turn lane into the path of an oncoming delivery van.

The van went off the road and had heavy front-end damage. The driver was trapped inside and had to be freed by first responders. The Walker Fire Department said the extrication "required precise communication & skilled teamwork" due to the mechanics of the crash and how the vehicle was damaged.

He was later taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The driver and passenger of the black sedan were also hurt and were treated at the scene.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

Anyone who witnessed the crash and has not spoken with investigators is asked to call the Walker Police Tip Line at 616-791-6788.

Legal Options After a Crash in Michigan

Michigan is a no-fault state, which means people injured in a crash may qualify for Personal Injury Protection benefits without first proving who caused the crash.

These benefits can help cover economic losses from the crash such as allowable medical expenses, wage loss, replacement services or attendant care.

Recovering noneconomic losses usually requires a separate claim against an at-fault driver. This may be an option if the injuries meet Michigan’s threshold of serious impairment of body function, permanent serious disfigurement or death.

Michigan law generally requires drivers on marked roadways to stay within a single lane until they first determine that moving from the lane can be done safely. If a vehicle crossed through a center turn lane into oncoming traffic, that may impact the outcome of a civil investigation.

Commercial Vehicle Issues After a Delivery Van Crash

Fault in a commercial vehicle crash may change depending on the driver, employer, vehicle owner, insurance coverage, route records, maintenance history and whether the driver was working at the time of the crash.

Not every delivery van crash is governed by the same federal trucking rules that apply to semi-trucks or larger commercial motor vehicles. However, company vehicle crashes can still raise evidence and liability issues that are not always present.

Important evidence may include driver records, dispatch or delivery records, GPS or telematics data, dashcam video, maintenance records, inspection records, company communications, insurance information and witness statements.
