Muskegon woman dies after two-vehicle crash in Egelston Township

A 44-year-old Muskegon woman died after a two-vehicle crash Thursday night in Egelston Township.

The Muskegon County Sheriff’s Office responded at about 7:05 p.m. Thursday to the intersection of Maple Island Road and Evanston Avenue, according to a release.

Investigators said preliminary findings show the woman was driving a Chrysler west on Evanston Avenue and did not stop at the stop sign and was hit by a Hyundai traveling north on Maple Island Road.

She was taken to Trinity Hospital, where she died. The two people in the Hyundai were also taken to Trinity Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Deputies said investigators had not determined whether drugs or alcohol were factors. The crash remained under investigation.

Michigan benefits and claims after a fatal car crash

Under MCL 500.3108, eligible dependents may receive survivor’s loss benefits for certain economic contributions and replacement services, subject to statutory limits, for no more than the first three years after the crash. Whether those benefits apply depends on dependency, policy and insurance priority facts. Michigan Legal Center’s explanation of who pays medical bills after a Michigan car accident describes how no-fault benefits differ from a separate claim against another driver.

Separately, MCL 500.3135 permits a fault-based claim for losses that do not have a direct dollar value when a motor-vehicle crash causes death. A claim still requires proof of another person’s fault, and available insurance and other facts can affect recovery. No-fault benefits do not establish fault or guarantee a civil recovery.
