Rockford area man dies in Clinton County crash

A 60-year-old Rockford area man died Friday after a single-vehicle crash in Duplain Township, according to WILX reporting that cited the Clinton County Sheriff's Office.

Officials said the crash happened around 10 a.m. Friday, June 12, 2026, on North Watson Road in Duplain Township near Ovid.

According to the report, the man drove off the road and hit a tree. He was taken to University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Clinton, where he died.

Officials said no other vehicles or passengers were involved.

Authorities had not said what may have caused the crash. WILX reported that it was not immediately clear whether drugs or alcohol were involved.

The Ovid Fire Department, Elsie Fire Department, Clinton Area Ambulance, and Clinton County Central Dispatch assisted at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.

Legal issues after a fatal single-vehicle crash in Michigan

A fatal single-vehicle crash can still raise insurance, estate, and evidence questions, even when no other vehicle is reported. It does not, by itself, establish that another driver, company, road authority, or product defect was involved.

Michigan no-fault benefits may be available after a motor vehicle crash without first proving fault under MCL 500.3105. In a fatal crash, survivor's loss benefits under MCL 500.3108 and any possible wrongful death issue under MCL 600.2922 depend on the evidence and the completed investigation.

Because officials have not reported what caused this crash, families should preserve insurance paperwork, vehicle information, repair records, photographs, medical and funeral records, and any Clinton County Sheriff's Office crash report or investigative materials.
