Oceana County Crash Kills Driver, Seriously Injures Passenger

A 22-year-old driver was killed and a 40-year-old passenger was seriously injured after a single vehicle left South Oceana Drive and struck a utility pole in Oceana County, according to Michigan State Police.

MSP said troopers from the Hart Post responded at about 11:50 p.m. on South Oceana Drive, south of West Buchanan Road. The vehicle was traveling north when it lost control, left the roadway and hit the pole, according to state police.

Both occupants were ejected. State police said the driver was pronounced dead at the scene and the passenger was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.

MSP said the crash remains under investigation. The agency listed the Oceana County Sheriff's Office, Mason-Oceana 911, Life EMS, Shelby-Benona Fire Department, Great Lakes Energy and Eagle Towing as assisting agencies.

Legal Issues After a Fatal Single-Vehicle Crash

A Michigan crash can raise no-fault questions even before fault is clear. For an injured passenger, medical bills and related benefits may depend on the no-fault and priority rules, including whether the passenger has an available auto policy, a household policy or another source of coverage.

The driver's death may also create questions for the family. Michigan's wrongful death statute can matter if evidence later shows that another person, a vehicle issue, an unsafe road condition or another legally responsible party contributed to the crash.

MSP has not reported another vehicle or a cause. In a single-vehicle loss-of-control crash, the investigation, vehicle condition, utility-pole impact evidence, insurance policies and medical records can affect what claims are available.
