Man Killed, Woman Injured in Great Lakes Crossing Shooting

A 20-year-old man was killed and a 19-year-old woman was injured in a Saturday afternoon shooting at Great Lakes Crossing Outlets in Auburn Hills, police said.

Auburn Hills police said the shooting began in the mall's food court and appeared to stem from an earlier incident involving the male victim and a 22-year-old suspect, according to WXYZ. Police have not explained what happened before the shooting.

The suspect was in custody Saturday evening. Police called the shooting isolated, said there was no active threat to the public, and worked to evacuate the mall.

Police described the woman's gunshot wound as non-life-threatening and said she was taken to a hospital. No later medical update has been released.

Auburn Hills police are leading the investigation with help from the Oakland County Sheriff's Office. Authorities had not publicly identified the man, woman, or suspect, and no charges had been announced as of Saturday evening.

Legal Questions After a Fatal Mall Shooting

The criminal investigation and any civil claims are separate. If the facts support a claim that another person's wrongful act caused the man's death, MCL 600.2922 governs a Michigan wrongful-death action brought through the estate. Families can learn more about Michigan wrongful-death claims and deadlines.

The injured woman and the deceased man's family may also want to review Michigan's Crime Victim Compensation Program. The program may help with qualifying out-of-pocket medical expenses, lost earnings, funeral bills, counseling, and other crime-related costs.

A shooting inside a mall does not by itself prove a negligent-security claim. Under the Michigan Supreme Court's decision in MacDonald v PKT, Inc, a merchant's duty involving third-party crime turns on notice of imminent and foreseeable harm and reasonably expediting police involvement. Mall video, security communications, and 911 records may help show the sequence and whether anyone had advance warning.
