E-Bike Rider Dies After SUV Crash Near Edmore in Montcalm County

A 67-year-old Edmore man died after deputies said his e-bike was hit by an SUV on Neff Road near M-46 in Home Township.

The crash happened around 1:25 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, 2026, near Edmore, according to a WOODTV report that cited the Montcalm County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said the man was riding an electric bicycle when he left a private driveway, turned south onto Neff Road, and failed to yield to an SUV traveling north. The SUV then hit the e-bike, the Sheriff's Office said.

The rider was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died. His name was not immediately released.

Deputies said the SUV driver, a 66-year-old Blanchard woman, was not hurt. Investigators said they did not believe speed played a role in the crash and said the e-bike rider was not wearing a helmet.

Neff Road was closed for hours while deputies investigated. The initial report did not identify any citation, final crash finding, e-bike class, insurance issue, or civil filing.

Legal Issues After a Fatal E-Bike and SUV Crash

Michigan law includes people riding electric bicycles in the roadway-rights and duties rule for bicycles under MCL 257.657. That rule does not decide fault in this crash because the public report gives only an early sheriff-attributed sequence and does not include final crash findings, sight-line evidence, witness statements, or video.

Because the crash involved an SUV and ended in death, families may also need to separate No-Fault benefit questions from any wrongful death review. MCL 500.3105 addresses when No-Fault benefits can arise from use of a motor vehicle, while MCL 500.3108 addresses survivor's loss benefits after a death.

A Michigan wrongful death claim under MCL 600.2922 is handled through the estate and depends on proof of a wrongful act, neglect, or fault. Here, the practical evidence questions would likely focus on the driveway exit, traffic direction, road position, sight lines, sheriff's final findings, and any available witness or video evidence.
