Davison teen critically injured in East Atherton Road e-bike crash
A 14-year-old Davison boy was critically injured early Thursday when a car struck his e-bike in Davison Township.
Davison Township Police said the crash happened at about 4:28 a.m. Aug. 13 in the 7000 block of East Atherton Road.
Police said a 31-year-old Burton man was driving east on East Atherton Road when his car struck the boy, who was riding the e-bike in the same direction.
The boy was taken to an area hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
Investigators said speed and alcohol are not considered factors in the crash. The Davison Area Reconstruction Team continues to investigate.
The road reopened about 7:15 a.m. Davison Township Police were assisted by Davison City Police, Richfield Township Police, the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department and the Davison-Richfield Fire Department.

Can an e-bike rider receive no-fault benefits and pursue an injury claim?
Possibly. If the device qualifies as an electric bicycle under Michigan law, Michigan’s no-fault statute does not treat it as a motor vehicle. A qualifying e-bike rider injured in a crash involving a motor vehicle may be eligible for personal protection insurance benefits without first proving fault.
Coverage may begin with the rider’s own or a qualifying household policy under MCL 500.3114. If that coverage does not apply, MCL 500.3115 directs a person injured outside a motor vehicle to claim benefits through the Michigan Assigned Claims Plan.
A separate fault-based injury claim depends on proof of negligence, causation and damages. For noneconomic loss such as pain and suffering, MCL 500.3135 generally requires death, a serious impairment of body function or permanent serious disfigurement.
