Williamston boy killed, sister injured in Leroy Township bicycle crash

A 12-year-old Williamston boy was killed and his 13-year-old sister was seriously injured when an SUV struck their bicycles in Leroy Township. The crash happened Saturday, September 5, Michigan State Police said.

The collision occurred about 11:35 a.m. on Grand River Avenue near North Meech Road in Ingham County.

Police said a 64-year-old Williamston woman was driving a Ford Explorer west on Grand River when it struck the siblings, who were riding on the shoulder. The driver was not injured.

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene. His sister was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Both children were wearing helmets, troopers said.

Investigators said drugs or alcohol do not appear to have contributed to the crash. Troopers from the Michigan State Police Lansing Post are continuing the investigation.

Community members have also rallied around the family. WILX reported September 6 that a fundraiser organized by David Rawson raised more than $40,000 in its first six hours to help cover the family's expenses.

Legal Requirements When Passing Bicyclists

Under MCL 257.636(2), drivers overtaking a bicycle traveling in the same direction must pass at a safe distance of at least three feet to its left. If that clearance is impracticable, the law still requires passing at a safe distance to the left and at a safe speed.
