Driver thrown from car during rollover crash in Grand Rapids
Driver thrown from car in rollover crash in Grand Rapids early morning Monday, June 22.
According to Michigan State Police, the crash occurred at around 2:30 a.m. on the eastbound ramp from I-196 to I-96 in Grand Rapids.
The single vehicle crash happened when the 22-year-old driver from Sparta left the road and rolled. He was thrown from the vehicle and suffered serious injuries. He was later taken to a hospital for treatment.
Police believe he was not wearing a seatbelt and that speed was a factor in the crash.
Legal options after an accident
Michigan is a no-fault state, which means that without having to determine whose fault an accident is, people injured in the crash may qualify for Personal Injury Protection benefits.
These benefits can help cover economic losses from the crash such as allowable medical expenses, wage loss, replacement services or attendant care.
Recovering noneconomic losses usually requires a separate claim against an at-fault driver. This would only be an option if the injuries meet the state’s threshold of serious impairment of body function, permanent serious disfigurement or death.
