Hillsdale man injured after motorcycle collided with pickup

A pickup truck crash leaves motorcycle driver injured in Jefferson County Tuesday morning.

According to Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Office, the accident took place at around 5:30 a.m. when 62-year-old motorcycle rider Bradley Kingsley of Hillsdale collided with a pickup truck in the intersection of Hudson and Pioneer roads.

The other vehicle was a Chevrolet Silverado driven by 61-year-old Ohio man Frederick Heimann who was driving north on Pioneer Road when the accident occurred.

Kingsley was taken to Hillsdale Hospital with serious injuries. The Hillsdale County Sheriff's Office released no further details. The crash remains under investigation.

Legal options after an accident

Michigan is a no-fault state, which means that an injured person may qualify for Personal Injury Protection benefits without having to determine whose fault an accident is.

These benefits can help cover economic losses for injuries caused by the crash such as allowable medical expenses, wage loss, replacement services or attendant care.

Recovering noneconomic losses usually requires a separate claim against an at-fault driver. This would only be an option if the injuries meet the state’s threshold of serious impairment of body function, permanent serious disfigurement or death.

Legal Issues After a Michigan Motorcycle Crash

Michigan treats motorcycles differently under its no-fault law. A motorcycle policy does not include ordinary PIP coverage, but a rider injured in a crash involving a car, truck or another motor vehicle may still qualify for PIP benefits.

PIP benefits may cover reasonably necessary medical care, rehabilitation, wage loss and replacement services, subject to the limits and requirements of the applicable policy. Michigan law explains those benefit categories in MCL 500.3107. If no motor vehicle was involved, the rider’s health insurance or optional motorcycle medical coverage may become more important.
