Driver killed after vehicle hits tree south of Hesperia

A 41-year-old man from the Twin Lake area was killed Wednesday night after his vehicle left the road and hit a large tree in Oceana County.

Michigan State Police said the crash happened around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 10, 2026, in the area of 192nd Avenue and McKinley Road in Greenwood Township, south of Hesperia.

According to state police, the vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a large tree. The driver died at the scene, and no one else was inside the vehicle.

State police said it was not immediately clear what caused the crash. The crash remains under investigation.

MSP reminded drivers to remain alert, avoid distractions and wear a seat belt.

Legal issues after a fatal single-vehicle crash in Michigan

A single-vehicle crash can still raise legal and insurance questions. Investigators may review roadway conditions, lighting, tire or mechanical issues, vehicle maintenance, possible medical issues, phone use, seat belt use, and whether another vehicle or road hazard contributed before the vehicle left the roadway.

Michigan no-fault benefits may be available after a motor vehicle crash without first proving fault. In a fatal crash, available benefits can depend on insurance coverage, priority rules, household relationships, survivor dependency, and whether the crash arose from the ownership, operation, maintenance, or use of a motor vehicle.

If another person, a defective vehicle part, negligent maintenance, an unsafe roadway condition, or another third party contributed to the crash, the family may need to evaluate whether a separate wrongful death claim is available. Those claims depend on the evidence, fault, and the specific legal theory.

When possible, families should preserve the vehicle, insurance paperwork, repair records, photographs, event data, phone records, and any crash report or MSP investigative materials.
