Boy injured in Beaverton Township buggy crash
An 11-year-old Amish boy was seriously injured Wednesday morning after the horse-drawn buggy he was driving was struck by a Buick Enclave in Gladwin County.
Reports citing the Gladwin County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded around 10:05 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, to McCulloch Road, about one-quarter mile north of Lang Road in Beaverton Township.
Investigators believe the buggy was leaving a residential driveway when it entered the road and was struck by a 2016 Buick Enclave driven by a 79-year-old Gladwin County woman. Reports said vegetation near the end of the driveway may have blocked the boy's view.
The boy was taken to a Midland hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The Buick driver was also injured and was taken to a hospital in Gladwin.
The horse did not survive the crash.
Public reports did not say whether any citation had been issued as of Thursday.
Legal issues after a Michigan buggy crash involving a vehicle
A crash between a motor vehicle and a horse-drawn buggy can raise several legal and insurance questions. Investigators may review driveway sightlines, vegetation, roadway layout, vehicle speed, driver reaction time, buggy visibility, lighting, reflectors, weather, and witness statements.
Even though a horse-drawn buggy is not a car, the involvement of a motor vehicle may make Michigan no-fault benefits important. Those benefits can matter for medical bills and care needs while the crash investigation and any fault issues are reviewed.
If the injuries meet Michigan's serious-impairment threshold, a separate claim against an at-fault driver may also need to be evaluated. That analysis depends on the full evidence, not only the first public description of how the crash happened.
When possible, families should preserve photographs of the roadway, driveway, vegetation, buggy, vehicle damage, medical records, insurance information, witness names, and any sheriff's office crash report or reconstruction materials.
