Five injured in I-96 crash in Redford Township
Two adults and three juveniles were injured Tuesday when their car crashed on I-96. Redford Township police said all five were in stable condition.
Michigan State Police said officers responded at approximately 12:56 p.m. Sept. 8 to westbound I-96 near Beech Daly Road. The crash involved one vehicle.
The westbound lanes were closed, with traffic directed off the freeway at Telegraph Road. They reopened Tuesday afternoon.
Redford Township police are investigating the crash. State police assisted only with the freeway closure. The cause remains under investigation.
Passenger injury claims after a Michigan crash
An injured passenger may qualify for personal injury protection (PIP) benefits even when only one vehicle is involved. These no-fault benefits can help pay for necessary medical care, lost wages and certain household services, subject to eligibility requirements and coverage limits. Receiving them does not require proving that a driver caused the crash.
The driver’s insurance is not automatically responsible for a passenger’s medical bills. Under MCL 500.3114, coverage generally starts with the injured person’s own no-fault policy or qualifying coverage through a spouse or relative in the same household.
A separate claim against a negligent driver requires proof that the driver caused the injuries. For pain and suffering damages, MCL 500.3135 generally requires death, permanent serious disfigurement or a serious impairment of body function. A serious impairment must be observable through actual symptoms or conditions, affect an important body function and influence the person’s general ability to live normally.
