Consumers Energy lineman electrocuted in Shiawassee County
A 48-year-old Consumers Energy line worker was electrocuted while doing overhead electrical work in Shiawassee County.
Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) records say the death occurred Aug. 13 in Henderson. The agency lists it as No. 30 among workplace fatalities reported to MIOSHA in 2026.
Consumers Energy confirmed Monday that the worker was one of its linemen.
“We are providing resources to support our fellow coworkers who have known and worked with him and extending our love to his family,” Consumers Energy said.
Consumers Energy did not release additional details about the incident.
The company said it will work with local and state officials to determine what happened.
Workers’ compensation and third-party claims after a fatal workplace accident
Michigan workers’ compensation may provide death benefits to qualifying dependents when an employee dies from a compensable work injury. The Michigan Workers’ Disability Compensation Agency’s eligibility guidance explains the connection required between the injury and the employment.
MCL 418.827 allows an employee’s dependents or personal representative to pursue damages when someone other than the employer or a coworker may have legal responsibility. Accepting workers’ compensation benefits does not waive that potential third-party claim.
Michigan Legal Center’s discussion of Michigan personal injury case types explains why workplace injuries may require separate review of workers’ compensation benefits and possible third-party claims.
