18-Year-Old Critically Injured in Leoni Township Motorcycle Crash
An 18-year-old motorcyclist was critically injured Wednesday afternoon in a Leoni Township crash on Page Avenue near South Sutton Road.
The Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety is investigating the crash, according to WILX News 10.
Preliminary findings from the department's Crash Reconstruction Unit indicate the motorcycle was traveling east on Page Avenue when it collided with another vehicle. WILX reported that the rider was ejected into the westbound lane, where he was struck by an oncoming vehicle.
The motorcyclist was taken to a local hospital with critical injuries. Occupants of the other vehicles involved were not injured, according to the report.
The cause remains under investigation. WILX reported that preliminary evidence suggests speed and an improper passing maneuver may have contributed.
Police asked anyone who witnessed the crash or has additional information to contact the Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety at (517) 788-4223. No additional information had been released in the initial report.
Legal Issues After a Leoni Township Motorcycle Crash
When a Michigan motorcycle crash involves other motor vehicles, the insurance review can be different from an ordinary car-occupant claim. MCL 500.3114 has specific priority rules for a motorcycle operator or passenger injured in an accident that shows evidence of motor-vehicle involvement.
That no-fault issue is separate from fault. Here, the preliminary public account says speed and an improper passing maneuver may have contributed, but the investigation is still open. Any third-party injury claim would depend on the final reconstruction, witness accounts, vehicle damage, roadway evidence, and any available video showing how the collision and ejection occurred.
Critical injuries can also raise a separate pain-and-suffering question under MCL 500.3135, but the legal threshold depends on medical proof and how the injuries affect the person's normal life.
