When Myia Jones was hit by a cop car in Detroit, she needed Michigan Legal Center’s help covering her medical bills and car repairs.
Myia was turning into a gas station on Grand River Avenue when she was hit by a Detroit Police Department patrol car. The car hit the driver’s-side door and seriously injured Myia. Emergency medical services transported her to a local hospital, where she was treated.
From that day forward, she dealt with recurring neck and shoulder pain and had difficulty with many of her regular daily activities. Her independence and family life were greatly affected. She could no longer cook, take out the trash, dance, or even style her son’s hair.
She was also unable to work because of the continuing pain and difficulty moving, leading to lost wages.
She continued receiving treatment as her condition worsened. X-rays and MRIs revealed a tear in the cartilage around the top of her right shoulder joint and damage to two shoulder tendons. Neck imaging showed a ligament injury consistent with whiplash and injured spinal discs affecting nearby nerves and pressing against the front of her spinal cord.
Myia received chiropractic care and underwent an orthopedic evaluation. She had a right shoulder manipulation, followed by arthroscopic surgery to treat the labral tear.
Michigan Legal Center represented Myia in her auto negligence claim against the City of Detroit. Her attorneys obtained police reports and dashcam footage through public-record requests, took depositions from Myia and the involved officers, collected witness statements, and obtained medical affidavits supporting the connection between the collision and her injuries.
The Detroit City Council unanimously approved a settlement for Myia proposed by the Detroit Law Department. Combined with her personal injury protection benefits, Myia received a total of $195,500 after settling the case with the help of Michigan Legal Center.
Michigan Legal Center fought for Myia and her needs. The settlement helped her recover and move forward.
