Bicyclist critically injured in Flint Dort Highway crash

A bicyclist was critically injured when a Jeep hit him in Flint early Wednesday, Nov. 4.

The Flint Police Department's Traffic Bureau responded about 5:35 a.m. near East Court Street and South Dort Highway. Police said their preliminary investigation found that the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the bicyclist were both heading north when the SUV hit him.

The man received emergency medical treatment at the scene before being taken to a local hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

The driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Based on initial findings, police don't believe speed, alcohol or drug impairment contributed to the crash.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information can contact Detective Sgt. Matthew Gocha at 810-237-6894. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-422-5245 or through the P3 Tips app.

What rights do bicyclists have on Michigan roads?

Bicyclists generally have the same rights and duties as drivers on a roadway, with exceptions for bicycle-specific rules and provisions that don't naturally apply to bicycles. Riding a bicycle doesn't by itself make someone responsible for a collision.

Michigan's passing law, MCL 257.636, generally requires a driver overtaking a bicycle going in the same direction to leave at least 3 feet to its left. If that clearance is impracticable, the driver must still pass at a safe distance and a safe speed.

Michigan Legal Center explains how unsafe passing and other driver conduct can affect an injury claim in its discussion of bicycle and e-bike accident claims in Michigan.
