West Iron County school bus crash
A 27-year-old woman was injured Monday when her car rear-ended a school bus carrying one student. The student and bus driver weren’t injured.
Iron County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched about 7 a.m. Sept. 14 to U.S. 2 near Sunset Lake Road. The Iron County woman was driving a Saturn Aura that hit a West Iron County Public Schools bus.
The preliminary investigation showed the bus was stopped with its stop arm extended and flashing red lights activated.
The woman, who was alone in the car, was taken to Aspirus Iron River Hospital for treatment.
“Please know that the safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority, and we appreciate the care and support shown to those involved this morning,” said Iron County Schools Superintendent Kevin Schmutzler. “A special thank you to our law enforcement and first responders for their quick actions.”
The sheriff’s office said Monday that the investigation was still underway.
Michigan’s rules for stopping behind a school bus
Drivers approaching a stopped school bus from behind must stop at least 20 feet away when its red lights are flashing. Under MCL 257.682, they must remain stopped until the bus starts moving again or the flashing signals turn off.
The stopping requirement applies before a driver reaches the bus. Failing to stop as required is a civil infraction carrying a fine of $100 to $500.
Can an injured driver receive no-fault benefits after causing a crash?
