Midland school bus crash; no student injuries reported

Central Park Elementary School students arrived safely at school after a vehicle rear-ended their bus Thursday morning.

Midland Public Schools said no injuries were reported among the students aboard the bus in the Sept. 10 crash. The bus was taking students to school when a personal vehicle hit it from behind.

The district contacted the families of students on board and said it would continue supporting them. In its morning message to families, the district said it was investigating the crash and cooperating with local law enforcement.

Michigan law on bus crashes

Michigan’s following-distance law, MCL 257.643, makes following too closely to a school bus a civil infraction. This means the following driver is initially presumed to have failed to use reasonable care. The driver can challenge that presumption with evidence.
