Two Killed in Wrong-Way U.S. 127 Crash in Isabella County

Two drivers were killed early Sunday in a wrong-way head-on crash on northbound U.S. 127 in Isabella County, Michigan State Police said.

Troopers from the MSP Mt. Pleasant Post responded near East Vernon Road, north of Rosebush, at approximately 3:05 a.m. on July 12.

The preliminary investigation found that a 24-year-old man from Ridgway, South Carolina, was driving a Toyota 4Runner south in the northbound lanes. The 4Runner collided head-on with a Kia Stinger driven by a 22-year-old man from Moss Point, Mississippi, MSP said.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. Police had not publicly released their names as of Sunday afternoon.

MSP said alcohol and speed are believed to have contributed to the crash. The agency did not specify which driver that finding concerns, explain how those factors contributed or report any toxicology results. The investigation remains open.

Northbound U.S. 127 was closed for several hours while troopers worked at the scene. The highway later reopened.

Legal Questions After the Fatal U.S. 127 Crash

MSP's early account describes what investigators believe happened, but it is not a final civil-liability finding. The reconstruction, toxicology results and other evidence may affect whether the facts support a wrongful death claim.

Under MCL 600.2922, a Michigan wrongful death action is brought by the deceased person's estate through its personal representative when a death results from another's wrongful act, neglect or fault. Families can read more about Michigan wrongful death deadlines, but the correct deadline depends on the underlying claim and any notice or probate issues.
