Teen seriously injured in Warren bike crash

A 12-year-old bicyclist was hit by a pickup truck and dragged, in Warren, causing serious injuries.

The child was in stable condition and expected to survive, according to the Warren Police Department. The crash happened Thursday afternoon, Oct. 15, near Van Dyke and Meadow avenues.

Investigators said a Dodge pickup was turning south onto Van Dyke as the child crossed Meadow. The child became trapped beneath the truck and was dragged a short distance before it stopped.

Warren firefighters freed the child and took them to a metro Detroit hospital. Nearby police agencies blocked traffic along the transport route to help firefighters reach the hospital quickly.

The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers, police said. Investigators don't suspect drug or alcohol impairment.

Van Dyke was closed after the crash but has reopened. The department's Traffic Crash Reconstruction Team continues to investigate.

Can a child bicyclist receive Michigan no-fault benefits?

Yes, if the child's injuries were the result of an auto crash and their injuries meet Michigan's eligibility requirements. Personal injury protection benefits can pay medical and rehabilitation expenses without taking fault into consideration.

A child doesn't need to own a car to qualify. Michigan Legal Center's explanation of Michigan bicycle and e-bike accident claims describes how applicable household auto insurance can cover an injured rider. For eligible riders without that coverage, MCL 500.3115 directs claims through the Michigan Assigned Claims Plan. Coverage limits and statutory exclusions can affect the benefits available.
