Semi crash fuel spill shut eastbound I-94 in Dearborn

Oil and diesel spilled across eastbound I-94 Saturday after a semi-trailer truck jackknifed, forcing traffic off the freeway.

Michigan State Police said the truck hit a median wall near Michigan Avenue in Dearborn shortly before 11 a.m. Sept. 19.

Traffic was diverted at Michigan Avenue while crews cleaned the roadway and worked to keep fuel from entering nearby storm drains. State police initially expected the closure to last several hours.

Reporting a truck crash and fuel spill in Michigan

Michigan law requires a driver involved in a crash to immediately report it to the nearest police officer or police station when there is a serious injury or more than $1,000 in property damage. That duty comes from MCL 257.622.

A fuel spill also creates an environmental concern. Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy accepts reports of spills and other environmental emergencies through its 24-hour hotline at 800-292-4706. This does not replace the requirement to call 911 when there is immediate danger or someone needs emergency help.
