Motorcyclist killed in Larkin crash

Tanner Blaine Schmidt, 26, of Mills Township, died Tuesday after a pickup turned left in front of his motorcycle.

The Midland County Sheriff's Office said the crash happened about 2:39 p.m. Sept. 15 on North Eastman Road in Larkin Township.

A preliminary investigation found Schmidt was riding south when a northbound pickup driven by a 72-year-old Mills Township man turned across his path.

Schmidt was pronounced dead at the scene. The pickup driver had minor injuries and was taken to MyMichigan Medical Center for treatment.

Firefighters from Larkin and Mills townships, MyMichigan EMS and the Michigan State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit assisted at the scene.

Michigan drivers have a responsibility to be sure the path is clear and use the turn signal before every turn under MCL 257.648.

At an intersection, according to MCL 257.650, when turning left at an intersection, it’s the turning driver’s responsibility to yield to incoming traffic. That protection applies to approaching motorcycles as well as other vehicles.
