Motorcyclist, 29, killed in Oshtemo Township crash
A 29-year-old Lawton man died at a hospital after his motorcycle collided with an SUV Wednesday evening.
Michigan State Police Paw Paw troopers said the crash happened about 6:30 p.m. Oct. 28 at the intersection of Stadium Drive and South 8th Street.
A 75-year-old Kalamazoo man driving a Subaru SUV was attempting to turn north onto 8th Street when the vehicle collided with the motorcycle, which was headed west on Stadium Drive.
The motorcyclist was taken to Bronson Hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died. He wasn't wearing a helmet, troopers said. The SUV driver had minor injuries and was wearing a seat belt.
Troopers said excessive speed may have contributed to the crash. They hadn't determined whether alcohol or drugs were involved, and the crash remains under investigation.
“Obey posted speed limits, eliminate distractions, and look twice for motorcycles before turning or changing lanes,” said DuWayne Robinson, the state police Fifth District public information officer.
When can a Michigan motorcyclist ride without a helmet?
A motorcycle operator riding alone can legally go without a helmet if they are at least 21 years old, have held a motorcycle endorsement for at least two years or passed an approved motorcycle safety course and have at least $20,000 in first-party medical benefits insurance in effect.
Riders should ask their insurer to confirm that coverage rather than assume a liability policy is enough. Michigan Legal Center explains how helmet use fits into broader insurance and liability questions in Michigan motorcycle accident claims and no-fault benefits.
