Motorcyclist critically injured in Sterling Heights crash
A 42-year-old man suffered life-threatening head injuries in a motorcycle crash Thursday in Sterling Heights.
The Sterling Heights Police Department said the crash happened Nov. 5 at Schoenherr Road and Carlisle Drive.
Police said a Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a Honda Accord were heading north on Schoenherr when the Honda slowed to turn. The motorcycle hit the car from behind.
The rider, a Sterling Heights resident, wasn't wearing a helmet and was knocked unconscious.
“Bystanders immediately rendered aid to the injured motorcyclist until Sterling Heights Fire Department personnel arrived,” police said in a news release.
He was taken to a hospital in critical condition. The teenage boy driving the Honda wasn't injured. He stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
Police said speed may have contributed to the crash. The investigation remained ongoing, with no final determination about the cause.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information can contact Officer Brian Halapi of the department's Traffic Safety Bureau at 586-446-2920.
Can adults ride a motorcycle without a helmet in Michigan?
Yes, but age alone isn't the only factor in that rule.
Under Michigan's motorcycle helmet rules, an operator riding alone must be at least 21 and carry at least $20,000 in motorcycle insurance coverage for the operator's own medical expenses to ride without a helmet. The operator must also have held a motorcycle endorsement for at least two years or passed an approved motorcycle safety course. Operators who don't meet those conditions must wear a helmet.
