Suspected impaired driver rear-ends MSP patrol car in Bridgeport Township

A suspected impaired driver rear-ended a Michigan State Police patrol car at a red light Tuesday evening in Bridgeport Township, but no one was hurt.

MSP's Third District said the July 14 crash happened at about 6:50 p.m. on northbound Dixie Highway near I-75. The trooper, assigned to the Tri-City Post, was stopped for the red light when the patrol car was hit from behind.

Police identified the other driver as a 71-year-old Saginaw man. They arrested him and lodged him in the Saginaw County Jail on reported allegations of operating while intoxicated with high blood alcohol content and having open intoxicants.

The public reports reviewed for this story do not name the driver or state the alleged alcohol test result. No injuries were reported for the trooper or the other driver.

What Does a Reported High-BAC OWI Arrest Mean?

Michigan's OWI statute, MCL 257.625, includes an alcohol-content category of 0.17 or higher. Police reported the high-BAC arrest description, but an arrest is not a conviction, and the prosecutor will decide what charge, if any, to authorize. MLC's guide explains what OWI means in Michigan after a crash.
