Coopersville Motorcyclist Critically Injured in Wright Township Bus Crash
A 22-year-old Coopersville motorcyclist was taken to a Grand Rapids hospital in critical condition after his motorcycle collided with a bus Friday morning in Wright Township.
The crash happened around 10:20 a.m. on July 3 at 8th Avenue and Roosevelt Street, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office.
Investigators said the rider was traveling south on 8th Avenue on a 1999 Harley-Davidson. A 35-year-old Conklin man was driving a bus west on Roosevelt Street.
Witnesses told deputies the bus stopped at the two-way stop, then pulled out in front of the southbound motorcycle as it tried to cross 8th Avenue. The motorcycle struck the side of the bus.
The intersection was closed while deputies gathered evidence and crews cleared the scene. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not said who owned the bus, whether anyone else was aboard, or whether any citations have been issued.
Legal Issues After a Michigan Motorcycle and Bus Crash
A Michigan motorcycle crash involving another motor vehicle can raise No-Fault questions that are different from an ordinary car-occupant claim. MCL 500.3114 includes specific priority rules for a motorcycle operator or passenger injured in an accident that shows evidence of motor-vehicle involvement.
The reported stop-sign and right-of-way facts may also matter, but they should be reviewed with the police report, witness statements, vehicle damage, and any video or operator records before anyone treats fault as decided. Michigan's stop-sign and right-of-way statute, MCL 257.649, is relevant legal context when a vehicle enters an intersection from a stop.
Because the other vehicle was a bus, ownership and use may matter. A private bus, school bus, public bus, nonprofit bus, or commercial passenger vehicle can raise different insurance, evidence, and notice issues. A separate pain-and-suffering claim generally depends on fault evidence and whether the injuries meet Michigan's serious-impairment threshold under MCL 500.3135.
