A 37-year-old Kalamazoo resident suffered life-threatening injuries in a bicycle crash involving a motor vehicle Saturday night.
The Township of Kalamazoo Police Department said the crash happened around 11:30 p.m. Oct. 10. It occurred on West Main Street near Turwill Lane.
The bicyclist was taken to a local hospital. The driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, police said.
The crash remains under investigation. Anyone who witnessed it or has video from the area around that time is asked to call township police at 269-567-7523 or Silent Observer at 269-343-2100.
Can a bicyclist receive no-fault benefits in Michigan?
Yes, if the injuries are the result of a motor vehicle crash and the rider meets Michigan's eligibility requirements. In bicycle accident claims in Michigan, personal injury protection benefits can help pay for necessary medical care, lost income and certain household services without proving another person caused the crash. Coverage limits and exclusions can affect which benefits are available.
Under MCL 500.3115, an eligible bicyclist who doesn't have applicable coverage through family policies must seek benefits through the Michigan Assigned Claims Plan. A lawyer can review the policies and help identify where to submit the claim.
