Bicyclist hospitalized after Spring Arbor Township crash
A 56-year-old Jackson man was hospitalized after his bicycle collided with a car in Spring Arbor Township early Oct. 30.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said the crash was reported at 3:44 a.m. at Spring Arbor Road and Reynolds Road. The man was riding west on Spring Arbor Road when he collided with a northbound car driven by a 51-year-old Spring Arbor woman.
“Our deputies, alongside our emergency response partners, acted swiftly to secure the scene and render medical aid,” Sheriff Gary Schuette said in a release.
Jackson Community Ambulance took the bicyclist to Henry Ford Jackson Hospital. The Spring Arbor Township Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
Deputies said their preliminary investigation indicated drugs and alcohol weren’t contributing factors. The sheriff’s office said its accident reconstruction and investigative team was working to determine how the crash happened.
Michigan bicycle crash benefits and injury claims
The paying insurer depends on the rider’s own auto coverage and any applicable coverage through a spouse or resident relative. Under MCL 500.3115, an eligible rider without applicable coverage claims benefits through the Michigan Assigned Claims Plan.
A separate claim against a negligent driver may provide compensation for pain and suffering if the rider suffers permanent serious disfigurement or a serious impairment of body function. A serious impairment must be observable to someone other than the rider, affect an important body function and influence the rider’s general ability to live as before. That compensation is reduced by the rider’s share of fault and barred if the rider is more than 50% at fault.
