Armed robbery leads to car chase and crash on I-96 in Grand Rapids
A man was taken into custody Sunday after a reported armed robbery in Grand Rapids led to a police pursuit and a crash on Interstate 96. No injuries were reported.
Grand Rapids police said officers responded around 2:30 p.m. to a reported armed robbery near Alpine Avenue NW and Crosby Street NW. The driver then led officers onto westbound I-96.
The vehicle crashed into a guardrail near M-21, also known as Fulton Street, shortly before 3 p.m. A woman and child were passengers in the vehicle, no injuries were reported in either the robbery or the crash.
The Michigan Department of Transportation’s Mi Drive map reported the crash at 2:55 p.m. Westbound I-96 was closed, and a later update showed the left eastbound lane blocked near Fulton Street. All lanes reopened shortly after 4:30 p.m.
The investigation is ongoing.
Michigan no-fault benefits after a crash
Michigan no-fault law may provide personal injury protection benefits for accidental bodily injury arising from the ownership, operation, maintenance or use of a motor vehicle. Those benefits are generally available without regard to fault under MCL 500.3105.
The applicable insurer and available benefits can depend on the injured person’s role in the crash, insurance policies and coverage selections. Michigan Legal Center’s explanation of who pays medical bills after a Michigan crash provides more detail about those priority questions.
