Cadillac police chase ends in parked trailer crash

Two teenagers face possible charges after crashing into a parked trailer during a police chase in Cadillac.

Police said officers tried to stop the vehicle for a traffic violation around 9:55 p.m. Sept. 9 on North Boulevard near Kenwood Park.

The driver fled, leading officers on a chase that ended when they hit a parked trailer at the dead end of Selma Street near Lake Cadillac.

Police said the teenage driver ran from the crash but later turned themselves in. The teenage passenger surrendered at the scene and was released to their parents.

The department said it forwarded the incident to the prosecutor’s office and probate court for consideration of charges.

Michigan law on fleeing police

Under MCL 257.602a, a collision resulting from fleeing the police can increase the offense to third-degree fleeing and eluding, even without an injury.

A passenger’s presence in the vehicle does not automatically make them guilty of the drivers crimes. Michigan’s model criminal jury instruction on mere presence explains that being present, even with knowledge of a crime, is not enough to prove that someone assisted in committing it.
