Two men killed in Saginaw County dirt bike crash
A 19-year-old Owosso man and a 20-year-old St. Johns man died after their dirt bikes collided head-on Saturday night.
The Saginaw County Sheriff's Office said the crash happened about 11:15 p.m. Oct. 24 in the 11000 block of Peet Road near Chesaning.
The men were riding in opposite directions on bikes without working headlights. They didn't see each other before the collision, investigators said.
The 19-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. The 20-year-old was taken to Covenant and pronounced dead on arrival.
Neither rider was wearing protective gear. Investigators said alcohol may have contributed to the crash, which remains under investigation.
Michigan no-fault coverage after a dirt bike crash
A crash involving only motorcycles or off-road vehicles generally doesn't trigger Michigan's personal injury protection benefits. Under Michigan's insurance definitions in MCL 500.3101, both are excluded from the term “motor vehicle.” Simply riding a dirt bike on a public road doesn't make a crash eligible for no-fault benefits.
When a qualifying car or truck is involved, a rider's eligibility depends on the vehicle's legal classification and the applicable insurance rules. Michigan Legal Center's explanation of motorcycle accident claims and no-fault benefits describes why motor vehicle involvement changes the coverage analysis.
