Man dies in Mount Clemens industrial building explosion
A 49-year-old Macomb Township man died Thursday, Oct. 22, after an explosion at an industrial building in Mount Clemens.
The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Mary Street building, between Cass Avenue and Hubbard Street, about 11:37 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Michigan claims after a fatal industrial accident
Eligible dependents may receive workers’ compensation death benefits when a covered employee dies from an injury arising out of and in the course of employment. Under MCL 418.131, workers’ compensation generally prevents a separate negligence lawsuit against the employer.
A claim against someone outside the employment relationship follows different rules. Under MCL 418.827, receiving workers’ compensation benefits doesn’t prevent eligible dependents or the estate’s personal representative from pursuing damages against a legally responsible third party other than the employer or a coworker.
Michigan Legal Center’s overview of workplace-related personal injury claims explains why employment status, work duties and insurance need review before assuming workers’ compensation is the only option.
