Woman killed, daughter injured in Lapeer County crash

A 65-year-old woman died and her daughter was injured in a crash Saturday morning.

The Lapeer County Sheriff's Office said the crash happened around 9 a.m. Oct. 3 at North Lapeer Road and Hickory Place Drive.

Lynn Goss, of Columbiaville, was driving an SUV west on Hickory Place Drive with her 42-year-old daughter as a passenger. Goss stopped at the stop sign before pulling into the path of a pickup truck.

The truck had no stop sign or signal. The pickup hit the side of Goss' SUV, and both vehicles came to stop at the corner of the intersection.

Goss died at the scene. Crews used hydraulic tools to free her daughter, who was taken to a hospital in stable condition with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The pickup's driver, a 36-year-old Fostoria man, and his 34-year-old passenger were not hurt.

Alcohol and excessive speed did not appear to be factors. The crash remains under investigation.

Michigan passenger injury claims

An injured passenger may qualify for personal injury protection benefits for medical care and certain lost wages regardless of which driver caused the crash. Eligibility and payment depend on the applicable coverage and Michigan's no-fault rules.

A separate claim for pain and suffering against an at-fault driver requires death, permanent serious disfigurement or serious impairment of body function under MCL 500.3135.

Michigan Legal Center's explanation of passenger injury claims after a Michigan car accident discusses how a claim can involve the driver of the passenger's vehicle, another driver or both.
