US-131 reopens after dump truck rollover injures driver in Grand Rapids
Southbound US-131 reopened Wednesday evening after a rollover crash spilled asphalt.
Michigan State Police said the crash happened Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 12, in the southbound lanes near Burton Street in Grand Rapids. The driver was injured in the crash and asphalt from the truck bed spilled into the road.
A preliminary information showed that a vehicle merging onto the freeway cut off the dump truck, causing it to overturn without a collision. Witness statements backed up this finding according to state police.
The dump truck driver, a 22-year-old Grand Rapids man, sustained burns to his back and a broken left arm. He was taken to a local hospital and was listed in stable condition.
The asphalt covered the left lanes of the freeway. Southbound traffic was diverted at Burton Street and allowed to reenter US-131 south of the crash while crews cleared the roadway.
The investigation remains ongoing.
