Two hospitalized after five vehicle crash on I-96 near Coopersville
Two people were hospitalized Wednesday morning after a five-vehicle crash on westbound I-96 near Coopersville, authorities said.
The crash happened around 9:30 a.m. near the 48th Avenue overpass, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.
A 22-year-old man from Paw Paw, Michigan was driving a pickup truck towing a trailer when he collided with four other vehicles. According to deputies, the pickup driver did not recognize that traffic was slowing down drastically due to a construction related lane closure ahead.
The pickup driver and another person were taken to local hospitals with injuries that were serious but not life threatening.
Westbound I-96 was closed for about an hour while deputies investigated and crews cleared the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
Legal options after a Michigan crash
Michigan is a no-fault state, meaning an injured person may qualify for Personal Injury Protection benefits without first proving who caused the crash. Under MCL 500.3105, those benefits may be available for accidental bodily injury arising from the use of a motor vehicle, subject to the applicable coverage and priority rules.
A separate claim for pain and suffering generally requires a threshold for injuries involving death, permanent serious disfigurement or a serious impairment of body function under MCL 500.3135.
