Two critically injured in Keene Township farm equipment crash
Two people had to be hospitalized after they were freed from their car in a crash with farm equipment Tuesday.
Ionia County Sheriff's Office deputies responded at 10:54 a.m. Sept. 29 to Feuerstein and Sparks roads in Keene Township.
Investigators said the farm equipment was turning left onto Sparks Road when a car tried to pass in a no-passing zone. The car hit the trailer as the equipment completed the turn.
The driver and a passenger were taken to Corewell Health in Grand Rapids.
Saranac Fire, Belding Fire, Life Ambulance, University of Michigan Survival Flight and Reed and Hoppes Towing assisted at the scene. The sheriff's office said the crash was under investigation.
Can you pass farm equipment in a no-passing zone in Michigan?
No. Under MCL 257.640, drivers must obey no-passing signs and pavement markings even when farm equipment ahead is moving slowly.
Before turning on a highway, an equipment operator must determine that the turn can be made safely and give the required signal under MCL 257.648.
Michigan Legal Center explains how these duties affect responsibility for a collision in its discussion of farm equipment crashes on Michigan roads.
