Three Missing Pinconning Fishermen Found Dead After Saginaw Bay Boat Incident
Three Mid-Michigan fishermen were found dead Wednesday following an overnight U.S. Coast Guard search in Saginaw Bay after the group failed to return from a fishing trip near Pinconning.
According to authorities, the three men launched a 19-foot fishing boat Tuesday afternoon from Gambill’s Landing in Pinconning Township and planned to fish in a popular area of Saginaw Bay known locally as the “Black Hole.” Family members contacted emergency officials around 9:40 p.m. after the men did not return home, prompting a large-scale emergency response.
The U.S. Coast Guard Sector Detroit coordinated the overnight search effort alongside the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Bay County Sheriff’s Office, and additional local agencies. Rescue crews used helicopters, patrol boats, and search equipment throughout the night while battling difficult conditions on the bay.
Search crews later located the overturned fishing boat approximately two to three miles offshore near Linwood in Saginaw Bay. Officials said the vessel appeared mostly intact when it was discovered in the water.
Victims Identified
Authorities identified the victims as:
- Chris Whitmer Sr., 71
- Ron Whitmer, 76
- Chris Whitmer Jr., 51
All three men were from Gladwin County, Michigan.
Officials recovered the victims Wednesday morning near the capsized vessel. Bay County Sheriff Troy Cunningham said at least one victim was found wearing a life jacket, while another was reportedly found holding one.
Autopsies are pending as investigators continue working to determine exactly what caused the deadly boating accident.

Authorities have not yet released an official cause of the incident. Investigators are expected to examine a number of factors, including weather conditions, water temperatures, wave activity, mechanical issues, and whether the boat may have taken on water before capsizing.
