Teen recovering after Bay City park minibike hit-and-run
A 14-year-old is recovering at home after a pickup truck hit his minibike in a Bay City park and left the scene.
Bay City Department of Public Safety officers responded about 4:45 p.m. Oct. 22 to Maplewood Park near Second and Grant streets. Investigators believe the driver intentionally hit the teen. Police later found the truck abandoned several blocks away near Lincoln and 10th streets.
Witnesses reported hearing people in the truck yelling racial slurs at the teen before it left the park.
The teen had bought the minibike just two days earlier after saving money over the summer, his mother said. He was taken to Covenant HealthCare in Saginaw and discharged Oct. 23.
“As of right now, he’s actually doing a lot better than you’d expect from getting run down,” his mother said.
Police released surveillance images Oct. 28 of two people wanted for questioning. By Oct. 29, police said the two had been identified. It wasn't clear whether either was in custody.
Investigators have asked residents near the park and Lincoln and 10th streets to check surveillance recordings for the truck or its occupants. Anyone with information can call the Bay City Department of Public Safety at 989-892-8571 or Bay County Central Dispatch at 989-892-9551. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-422-5245.
Michigan hit-and-run duties beyond public roads
Michigan's injury-crash stopping law applies on public or private property open to travel by the public. A driver who knows or has reason to believe they were involved in a crash must immediately stop and remain while fulfilling the required information and aid duties.
Those duties include giving the driver's name and address, vehicle registration number and the owner's name and address, showing a driver's license and reasonably helping an injured person obtain medical care. They apply regardless of who caused the crash.
If a driver reasonably and honestly believes remaining would result in further harm, the law allows immediate reporting to the nearest or most convenient police agency or officer to provide the required identification and license information. That exception isn't permission to leave without reporting.
