Teen killed in Dearborn crash near Monroe and Beech streets

A 16-year-old from Dearborn Heights died after losing control of a car and crashing into a tree Thursday morning.

The Dearborn Police Department said officers on patrol came across the crash about 8:23 a.m. Nov. 5 near Monroe and Beech streets. Dearborn Fire and Rescue crews took the driver to a local hospital, where the teen was pronounced dead.

Police said speed appears to have contributed to the single-vehicle crash. The investigation remains ongoing.

School officials said the driver was a junior at Annapolis High School. Superintendent Mark Kleinhans said students who need support can contact a staff member and that the school sent families resources to help them talk with their children about grief.

Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin said, “This is a terrible tragedy, and we extend our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim.”

No-fault benefits after a fatal single-vehicle crash

Michigan no-fault benefits don't require proof that another driver caused a crash. Depending on eligibility and coverage, personal injury protection can pay qualifying medical bills and funeral and burial expenses after a fatal single-vehicle crash. The policy's funeral and burial benefit limit must be between $1,750 and $5,000.

Dependents may also qualify for survivor's loss benefits under MCL 500.3108. These benefits replace financial support the person would have provided and reimburse qualifying replacement services, subject to statutory limits. They are available only during dependency and no later than three years after the crash.

Eligibility, policy exclusions and the available coverage affect what can be paid. Michigan Legal Center explains how coverage and insurer priority affect payment in its discussion of medical bills and no-fault benefits after a Michigan car accident.
