Stockbridge woman killed in M-65 crash in Alcona County
A Stockbridge woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash Tuesday evening.
The Alcona County Sheriff's Office identified her as Nicole Lyn Vermeylen, 50. The crash happened around 7:45 p.m. Oct. 27 on M-65 in Mitchell Township, Alcona County.
Deputies said Vermeylen was driving north when she lost control, crossed the centerline and hit multiple trees. Her vehicle came to rest in the southbound ditch, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators don't believe alcohol contributed to the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
Michigan survivor benefits after a fatal single-vehicle crash
Michigan no-fault benefits don't require proof that another driver caused the crash. When coverage applies, eligible dependents of someone killed in a motor vehicle crash can seek survivor's loss benefits for support they would have received.
Under MCL 500.3108, those benefits also cover up to $20 a day in expenses reasonably incurred for ordinary and necessary household services the deceased would have performed for dependents. Survivor's loss benefits are subject to statutory payment limits and aren't payable beyond the first three years after the crash.
