Several injured in five vehicle I-96 crash
Several people suffered minor injuries Wednesday in a five vehicle crash on I-96 near M-66 in Ionia County.
Michigan State Police said the crash occurred shortly before 4 p.m. July 29 on eastbound I-96, just east of M-66.
Three semi-trucks and two passenger vehicles were involved. According to MSP’s preliminary account, the driver of an eastbound semi didn’t stop in time and collided with another, starting a chain reaction crash involving the other vehicles.
Only minor injuries were reported, the exact number of injuries have not been reported. Local reports said multiple people were taken to hospitals for evaluation.
The crash closed eastbound I-96 and caused backups in both directions. The freeway later reopened.
Michigan no-fault benefits and injury claims after a multi vehicle crash
Michigan law separates personal protection insurance (PIP) benefits from a fault based injury claim. Under MCL 500.3105, PIP benefits are payable without regard to fault for accident injuries, subject to the statute and the applicable policy.

A separate claim for noneconomic loss against a responsible driver is governed by MCL 500.3135. It generally requires death, serious impairment of body function or permanent serious disfigurement.
