Semi driver dies in US-12 work zone crash

A 75-year-old semi-truck driver from Elkhart, Indiana, died after his truck hit a travel trailer stopped at a construction signal Tuesday in St. Joseph County.

Michigan State Police Marshall Post troopers said the crash happened about 8 a.m. Sept. 22 on eastbound US-12 near Burke Road in Mottville Township. Their preliminary investigation found that the semi rear-ended the trailer as it was waiting at a signal.

The truck driver was taken to a hospital, where he died. The other driver was hospitalized with injuries police described as not life-threatening. Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

Troopers said they do not believe alcohol contributed to the crash. Eastbound US-12 was closed until about 2 p.m. for the investigation and cleanup. The crash remains under investigation.

Under MCL 257.627, drivers need to stay at careful and prudent speeds for traffic and road conditions that let them stop within the clear distance ahead. A posted speed limit does not remove that duty.
